Postal addresses are given in the language of origin. In the case of a country that does not use the Roman alphabet, the address is given in French or English, according to national specifications for safe delivery of mail.

Translation of name

All translations of names of organisations have been provided by the editorial staff.

Name

Names are usually given in the language of origin, or an equivalent may be given in French or English.

Status

Gives the type of centre, its legal status and/or its regulatory authority, and its foundation date.

Main people in charge

N.B. "In charge of Mediterranean issues" is not an administrative title, it simply denotes the people responsible for all questions dealing with the Mediterranean.

Field of interest

The fields in which a particular institution works are given in decreasing order of importance as far as possible.
They have been selected according to frequency of occurrence and for their interest relating to the Mediterranean. Those which do not appear may be included under the aegis of wider areas of activity such as "Social sciences", "Earth sciences" or a related discipline.

Keywords

Keywords help to define the centres of interest of a particular institution more clearly. In fact, several institutions, each with its own particular field of study, may all be interested in the same subject viewed from a different angle, e.g. the subject of "migration" can refer to centres working in the fields of law, demography and cross-cultural phenomena, amongst other things.

Geographical focus

Gives the countries or geographical zones on which a centre's work is focused, listed as far as possible in decreasing order of importance. "Others" refers to those countries or geographical zones not included in the Directory. Only Mediterranean countries and the larger Euro-Mediterranean zones are mentioned.

Activities

Gives the type of activity or activities most representative of a centre. See "Type of activity" list.

Description

This section is only given in the French version. It describes the institution's aims, the activities being developed there and any partner organisations and countries with which it works.

Training/Education

Explains training offered by the centre and cites any diplomas it is authorised to deliver. This section is only given in the French version.

Resources

Information on the documentary, technical and human resources available at the centre. This section is only given in the French version.

Databank

Gives the addresses of the main databases produced by the listed institutions.

Periodicals

Includes two types of publication:
periodicals published at least once a year
series or collections covering the proceedings of symposia and seminars.
The original titles are given whenever possible.
